The Right Order to Apply Skincare Products (And Why It Actually Matters)

Most people own good skincare products. The problem is the order they use them in — and that alone can be the reason nothing seems to work.

Skincare isn't just about what you put on your skin. It's about when you put it on, and in what sequence. The wrong order means active ingredients can't absorb properly, moisturizers block treatments from reaching skin, and you end up with a shelf full of products that underperform. Here's how to get it right.

Step 1: Cleanser

Every routine — morning and night — starts with a clean face. But not all cleansers are created equal. A good cleanser doesn't just remove dirt and makeup. It preps your skin so everything that follows can actually absorb.

Look for a cleanser that works with your skin's natural pH rather than stripping it. Lactic acid cleansers, like fp Skin Prep, do double duty — they cleanse while gently dissolving dead skin cells, so your skin is clean and already starting to renew.

Apply to damp skin, massage in for 30-60 seconds, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Step 2: Toner or Exfoliant

After cleansing, your skin is clean but your pores are open and ready to receive. This is where a toner or exfoliant does its best work.

An AHA-BHA exfoliant applied at this stage — before serums and moisturizers — can penetrate effectively and work on texture, dark spots, and uneven tone. fp Skin Balance combines both acid types to resurface skin and even tone without the irritation of using them separately.

This step is typically done at night, not morning, since acids can increase sun sensitivity. Apply to dry skin after cleansing, allow to absorb for a minute, then move on.

Step 3: Targeted Treatments

Spot treatments and serums go on before moisturizer — always. If you apply your moisturizer first, you've created a barrier that your treatment can't get through.

If you're dealing with active breakouts, apply a targeted treatment like fp Skin BFF directly to the problem area at this stage. BFF's 2% salicylic acid formula works inside the pore to clear congestion — but only if it has direct contact with skin.

For acne-prone skin overall, a lightweight serum like fp Skin Confidence applied here adds moisture-binding ingredients that hydrate without clogging pores — exactly what acne-prone skin needs.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Moisturizer seals everything in. It locks down the active ingredients below it and prevents water loss throughout the day or night. Skipping this step — even if you have oily skin — is one of the most common skincare mistakes people make.

Oily skin still needs moisture. When skin is dehydrated it overproduces oil to compensate, which leads to more breakouts, not fewer.

Apply moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp from the previous steps. This helps lock in hydration rather than just sitting on top of dry skin. fp Skin Restore is formulated to absorb quickly without heaviness — effective for both day and night use.

Step 5: SPF (Morning Only)

If it's your morning routine, SPF is always last. Sunscreen needs to sit on top of everything else to form an effective barrier — layering anything over it breaks down its protection.

This step is non-negotiable. UV exposure is the leading cause of dark spots, premature aging, and uneven skin tone. All the serums and exfoliants in the world can't undo daily unprotected sun exposure.

Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single morning, regardless of the weather.

The Simple Rule to Remember

When in doubt, go thinnest to thickest. Water-based products first, oil-based last. Active treatments before moisturizers. And always, always SPF in the morning.

Your products work best when they're given the right conditions to do their job. Get the order right and you'll start seeing results from products you may have already written off.
