Walk into any beauty store and the skincare section will make you feel like you need 15 products and a chemistry degree just to wash your face. Serums, essences, ampoules, mists, exfoliants it goes on forever.
I've been a licensed esthetician for 30 years. I've worked with some of the most skin conscious people in Hollywood. And I'm here to tell you something the beauty industry doesn't want you to know: you don't need most of it.
A beginner skincare routine should have three steps. That's it. Do those three steps consistently and your skin will look better than it ever has better than most people who own 20 products and do a 45-minute routine every night.
Here's exactly what those three steps are.
Step 1: Cleanse
Every skincare routine starts with a clean face. This sounds obvious, but most people get it wrong in one of two ways: they either under cleanse (a quick splash of water doesn't count) or they over cleanse with harsh, stripping cleansers that leave skin red and tight.
The right cleanser removes the day's oil, pollution, and product buildup without disrupting your skin's natural moisture barrier. When your skin feels squeaky clean after washing, that's actually a bad sign it means your barrier has been stripped and your skin will overcompensate with more oil.
What you want is skin that feels clean but still comfortable. Soft, not tight.
For beginners with normal to combination skin, Prep Lactic Acid Exfoliating Cleanser is a great starting point it cleanses and gently exfoliates at the same time, so you're getting two steps in one. For acne prone skin, Hope Clarifying Charcoal Face Wash deep cleans pores without irritation.
Step 2: Tone
Most beginners skip this step because nobody really explains what it does. Here's the simple version: after you cleanse, your skin's pH is temporarily off-balance and your pores are open. A toner restores that balance, removes any leftover residue, and preps your skin to absorb whatever comes next.
Skip toning and the moisturizer or serum you apply after it sits on top of your skin instead of absorbing properly. Think of toning as the step that makes everything else work harder.
This takes about 10 seconds. Soak a cotton pad, swipe it across your face, let it dry. That's it.
Control Pore Refining Tonic is formulated to balance and tighten after cleansing. Most of my clients say this is the single step that made the biggest visible difference when they added it to their routine.
Step 3: Moisturize
Every skin type needs moisture yes, even oily skin. When skin is dehydrated it produces excess oil to compensate, which leads to clogged pores and breakouts. A good moisturizer keeps that cycle from starting.
For beginners, the most important thing is to find a moisturizer that suits your skin type. Oily and acne prone skin needs something lightweight that absorbs quickly without leaving residue. Dry skin needs something richer. Most people fall somewhere in between.
Apply after toning, while your skin is still slightly damp. This helps lock the moisture in.
For oily and acne-prone skin, Confidence Cream Serum is ideal it's thin enough to wear under makeup but hydrating enough to stop the oil overproduction cycle. For anti-aging and dry skin, Restore Anti-Aging Cream delivers deep hydration with peptides for firmer, more radiant skin.
That's Really It
Cleanser. Toner. Moisturizer. Morning and night.
I know it feels too simple. We're so conditioned to believe that more products equal better results. But in 30 years of practice, the clients whose skin transformed the most dramatically weren't the ones with the most elaborate routines. They were the ones who found three good products and used them every single day without fail.
Consistency beats complexity every time.
When to Add More
Once you've been doing the basic three steps for 4–6 weeks and your skin has adjusted, you can think about adding:
A spot treatment if you get occasional breakouts — BFF Blemish Fighting Formula is the one I recommend. Apply only to active blemishes before bed.
SPF in the morning non-negotiable if you care about your skin long-term. UV damage is the number one cause of premature aging and it makes pores look larger over time.
But honestly? Start with the three steps. Get those right first. Your skin will thank you.
